Saint Xavier University (SXU) communication sciences and disorders student Ella Kargle has been busy making her mark on campus as a student leader and preparing to enter a career of service where she can make a difference.

Kargle, a sophomore, chose to major in communication sciences and disorders because the discipline combines her love of health care and working with children.

"Speech, language and hearing are areas of life that I think a lot of people take for granted, and I want to make a difference in as many lives as I can through what I have learned," said Kargle.

Kargle also serves as a tutor in the Center for Learning and Student Support, tutoring math, biology and psychology. She enjoys sharing her love of learning with her peers and helping them succeed through solving problems, comprehending difficult concepts, and implementing new study strategies. She appreciates that her coursework is preparing her for both mentoring others and her professional future.

"My classes at SXU are helping me think critically, explore new ideas, and balance multiple commitments, which are all aspects that are preparing me for my career," said Kargle.

Kargle is a member of the Schmitt Scholars Program, which promotes the development of promising student leaders.

"The Schmitt Scholars Program has shaped me into a better leader by helping me to reflect on the kind of person I am as well as how I can utilize the skills I already have to help others. Throughout my year in the program, I have resonated with values of selfless leadership and inclusivity. By attending leadership summits and participating in service projects, I have built skills that will help me immensely in the future," said Kargle.

Kargle has recently been inducted as senator for the College of Nursing, Health Sciences and Business as a part of the Student Government Association (SGA). She is also part of the National Student Speech Language and Hearing Association (NSSLHA) and the Honors Program and a student worker for the Office of Financial Aid.

Amidst the busyness of her work and studies, Kargle is grateful for the memories she's made during her time at SXU.

"My favorite memories include the people I've met here. I know the relationships I've made with others will last a lifetime, and I am so grateful to be surrounded by such amazing friends, peers, and professors. I've also loved visiting the city and participating in campus events," said Kargle.

In the future, Kargle plans to earn a master's degree in speech-language pathology and work at a pediatric hospital. She looks forward to growing during her academic journey and in her service to the community.
