SXU Alumna Debuts New Book During Homecoming Week

Saint Xavier University (SXU) alumna Mireya Wirtz '91, '95 recently returned to SXU during Homecoming Week for a reading of her new book, "Fun Day With Misa." The book follows Misa, a playful miniature Australian Shepard who is less than thrilled about spending the day at her Granny's – but as the hours pass, Misa discovers there is fun, love, and magic in the simplest of things, learning that sometimes the best adventures are the ones least expected.
Wirtz, who writes under the author name Mireya Saldúa, got her writing inspiration from her real-life Australian Shepard puppy Misa.
"She’s small, fluffy, and full of personality – the kind of dog that instantly brings joy to everyone she meets. I wanted to capture her playful spirit while also creating something meaningful for children and families, especially in bilingual households like mine," said Wirtz.
Wirtz's writing process began with simple moments.
"It started with walks in the park, belly rubs, throwing her blue bone – and it grew into a story about curiosity, kindness, and celebrating everyday adventures. Becoming an author has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. To hold something in your hands that only once existed in your heart is indescribable," said Wirtz.
Wirtz hopes that readers --whether children, parents or grandparents-- feel connected and that English speakers pick up new Spanish words and Spanish speakers feel seen and celebrated. Most of all, she hopes families will read together and smile.
Though Wirtz, whose undergraduate and graduate studies were in business, had a long career in human resources, she recently took a major leap to become a children's book author and entrepreneur. She founded Come Along With Misa LLC and now writes, publishes and distributes bilingual books and merchandise centered around joyful literacy.
"Saint Xavier University gave me the foundation to be fearless. My time at SXU taught me discipline, compassion and service -- values that now guide me as I build a mission-centered brand. Whether I am negotiating with printers or reading to a room full of preschoolers, the confidence SXU instilled in me carries through," said Wirtz.
For Wirtz, returning to the SXU campus during Homecoming Week was emotional.
"Walking through the hallways I once rushed through as a student --now as an author sharing my book with children-- was incredibly humbling. The SXU community welcomed me with so much warmth. The children were engaged, the parents were smiling, and I felt right at home," said Wirtz.
Wirtz is proud to be an alumna and even prouder to give back by inspiring the next generation of Cougars (and hopeful future authors).
Hard at work on her next book "Misa Visits the Zoo/ Misa Visita el Zoológico," Wirtz has plans to expand her creativity even further, including into bilingual music, with a children’s song titled "Misa! Misa! Life is Beautiful," now streaming. Misa also has her own plushies, T-shirts, bookmarks, and more.
"This is just the beginning. My dream is to build a whole world around Misa -- one that promotes literacy, language, learning and joy. I want to thank SXU for not only supporting my journey but for reminding me that dreams don't have an expiration date. Whether you're six or 60, there is always time to create, learn, and share your gifts."
