Saint Xavier University (SXU) alumna Fabian Daniels '06 has been named a finalist for the Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Leadership.

The Golden Apple process is both rigorous and meaningful, designed to identify leaders who have had a deep and lasting impact on students. Daniels was nominated for the strong, inclusive school culture she has cultivated as the principal of Annie Jo Gordon Community Learning Center in Peoria, where her work is focused on empowering teachers and staff to create student-centered learning environments that encourage students to think critically and take ownership of their learning.

"Being named a finalist is truly an honor. It is both humbling and affirming to be recognized among such dedicated and impactful educators and leaders. This recognition reinforces my commitment to the work and motivates me to continue growing. I view it not only as a personal achievement, but as a reflection of the incredible students, staff and community I am fortunate to serve," said Daniels.

Daniels values the positive relationships she has built with students, staff, and the broader school community and takes great pride in being part of a true school family.

"One of my proudest accomplishments is leading our school to achieve the Illinois State designation of 'Commendable' last year. This recognition reflects the collective effort and dedication of our entire school community. Looking ahead, my goal is to maintain this status and work toward achieving an 'Exemplary' designation,” said Daniels.

Daniels, who earned a master's degree in education with a focus on teacher leadership from SXU, chose Saint Xavier because of its strong reputation among educators in her community. Its cohort model also provided the flexibility she needed to balance her responsibilities as a wife, mother and educator while continuing her education.

Daniels believes that her time at Saint Xavier helped her to become a transformational leader.

"My favorite memories from my time at SXU include collaborating with fellow educators and learning from the knowledge and real-world experiences of the professors. Those interactions enriched my learning and continue to influence my leadership today," said Daniels.

Daniels's passion for education began with her son.

"Reading to him and watching his excitement and curiosity grow sparked my love for teaching and learning. That passion was further affirmed when John Beaupre, a professor at Illinois Central College, described me as a 'natural teacher' in feedback on one of my first education papers," said Daniels.

Daniels is currently pursuing a doctorate in educational leadership at the American College of Education. In the future, she aspires to serve in a district-level central office role focused on student services, social-emotional learning, and teacher/administrator mentorship.
