Saint Xavier University (SXU) alumna Maria Mozdzen '00 has made it her mission to ensure the public knows what is in their water – and her chemistry studies at SXU laid the foundation for her fascination with water quality.

"While studying chemistry at SXU, I was fascinated by the science of water quality – how something so essential, so abundant, could be compromised by the smallest of contaminants. My curiosity sparked a lifelong commitment to improving water," said Mozdzen.

Mozdzen, who oversees Culligan International's Illinois EPA-certified water testing lab at its global headquarters as the senior lab manager, quality assurance officer, and bottled water specialist, is passionate about educating and empowering people about what's in their water. The lab runs nearly 300 tests each week to actively identify more than 45 different contaminants, from lead and arsenic to pharmaceuticals and bacteria. Mozdzen and her team of brilliant women scientists from all over the word serve homes, schools, daycares, hospitals, and businesses to ensure safe and clean water is available to all.

Mozdzen has over 26 years of experience in problem water and has introduced much-needed best practices, standard operating procedures, process improvements, and quality assurance methodology for the benefit of the Culligan Analytical Laboratory. Her focus has always been on providing training to staff on LIMS and other equipment, which creates more versatility and value to the Culligan organization.  Mozdzen has been selected by Culligan senior management to lead a continuous improvement project that acknowledges her superior work performance and ability to identify growth opportunities quickly. Currently, she serves on several IBWA and CBWA committees.

"I really enjoy helping people find proper water purification solutions for their current water source. By understanding which chemicals are in your water, you can completely protect yourself from exposure and consumption," said Mozdzen.

Mozdzen has always enjoyed science and math and found chemistry to be the best of both worlds. She is grateful for her time at SXU, which equipped her with specialized knowledge and technical skills relevant to her field, many that she still uses today.

"I still utilize the lessons I learned in both inorganic and organic chemistry on a daily basis when reviewing analytical data," said Mozdzen.

Mozdzen was one of only two female chemists in her graduating class.

"I was the first person to attend college in my family. Most of my family members had no idea what chemistry was. To be honest, being one of the two women in my graduating class made me proud and hopeful to what the future could possibly hold for me," said Mozdzen.

In the future, Mozdzen hopes to get more involved with problem water and in bottled water production development.

"I encourage everyone to find their passion. If you have passion, you will find success, and with success, you will never feel like you worked a day in your life."
