Josh Bogaski-Baugh, M.S.Ed
Director of Student Development

Josh Bogaski-Baugh holds a Bachelor of Arts in psychology and a Master of Science in Education. His experience and education is rooted in student development theory, leadership identity, and student advocacy. Before joining Saint Xavier University in 2017, Josh worked in student life including student conduct and Title IX, student development, admissions, academic advising, career services, course design and instruction, and student leadership.

At Saint Xavier University, Bogaski-Baugh teaches Transitions, oversees the Cougars LEAD leadership certificate program and chairs two planning committees including the Synergy Leadership Conference and Scarlet and Gray Awards.

In his spare time, Bogaski-Baugh is a fan of pro-wrestling and enjoys going to both WWE and AEW events whenever possible. He also enjoys trying new crafts, traveling and going to the beach in his spare time.

Kathleen Butler
Office Manager

Kathleen Butler has worked at Saint Xavier University for over six years and provides administrative support to the Center for SUCCESS.  She helps the team to inspire success by working together to make sure all students succeed both inside and outside of the classroom.  Along with keeping the Center for SUCCESS running smoothly, she also supports and coordinates all the clerical and data related tasks of the Student Employment Program on campus. 

As a neighbor to Saint Xavier University and sports fan, Butler can often be found cheering on our student athletes both in the gym and on the field.

Alison Chandler, M.A., M.S.
Executive Director of Student Development, Advising and Career Success

Alison Chandler, who joined the SXU family in early 2020, holds a Bachelor of Arts in sociology from Spelman College, a Master of Arts in educational psychology and counselor education from Tennessee Tech University, and a Master of Science in academic advising with a concentration in advising administration from Kansas State University. She began working in higher education in 2005 as an academic advisor for academically vulnerable college students, and has been very passionate about advising, student success, and holistic student development ever since.

Prior to joining SXU, Chandler spent 13 years serving in various advising, student and academic affairs, university teaching, and leadership roles at the Chicago Psychoanalytic Institute, the University of Nevada-Las Vegas, and Tennessee Tech University. She also served in several leadership positions within the local, regional, and national academic advising communities. In 2010, she was one of 10 academic advising professionals chosen from colleges and universities across the world to take part in a two-year Emerging Leaders Program. Chandler has also participated in the National Academic Advising Association's (NACADA) Advising Administrators' and Assessment Institutes, and has served on national advising steering committees.

She has three daughters, and in her spare time enjoys traveling, DIY projects, gardening, and remotely teaching English to children in China.

Bruce Colón, M.A.
Academic and Career Resource Advisor

Bruce Colón holds a Bachelor of Arts in communication and a Master of Arts in writing. Prior to Saint Xavier University, Colón worked in various capacities within the community college system as well as at Governors State University. He is passionate about personal empowerment and the key role education plays in that process.

On his downtime, he enjoys reading, physical fitness, playing guitar, and writing about pop culture on his entertainment blog.

Lisa Lyons, M.S.
Academic and Career Resource Advisor, Coordinator, Rebound and Advisor Training

Lisa Lyons holds a Bachelor of Arts in English and a Master of Science in college student personnel, both from Western Illinois University. She also completed specialized training in appreciative advising.

At Saint Xavier University, Lyons teaches the Transitions course, coordinates the Rebound Retention Program, is the campus co-chair for the Illinois Equity in Attainment initiative, and helped to create the Emerging Scholars Program, a mentoring program for African-American students.

Outside of Saint Xavier University, Lyons is involved with her church, civic organizations, and her sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

Jodi Martin
Academic and Career Resource Advisor

Jodi Martin has a bachelor's degree in psychology and a minor in business and has been a part of the Career Services team at SXU for more than 20 years, providing counseling and advising to current student and alumni on career and job search related issues. She enjoys meeting with both undergraduate and graduate students as they explore and pursue their future aspirations and encourages pre-professional related experiences throughout their college life.

Prior to working in higher education, Martin worked in the social service and the human resource industries.

She enjoys spending time with her family; running from soccer fields to school sports games. Martin also enjoys traveling, a wide variety of music and attending concerts.

Christopher Mendoza
Bilingual Academic and Career Resource Advisor

Chris Mendoza holds a Bachelors of Arts in history from SXU, and is currently pursuing an MBA in project management at SXU. After graduating, Mendoza spent a little over two years working at a law firm located in downtown Chicago.

Mendoza is very passionate about soccer. He has held season tickets for the Chicago Fire for the last five years.

Nancy Ortiz-Romero, MSW
Director of Student Support

Nancy Ortiz-Romero received her Bachelor of Science from Eastern Illinois University and a Master's in Social Work from Loyola University. Prior to coming on board at SXU, she worked as a mental health practitioner for Metropolitan Family Services. In her 15 years of practice, she worked with families, adults, youth and communities; all culminating in positive behavioral outcomes within diverse populations.

Ortiz-Romero also taught in the criminal justice department at Westwood College, delivering classroom lectures and connecting with college students. Today she is excited to be part of SXU and provide students with the support, guidance and resources to help them continue their success in higher education.

In her spare time, Ortiz-Romero enjoys spending time with her husband and three children, traveling, camping and gardening, and loves soccer.

Teresa Vazquez
Bilingual Academic and Career Resource Advisor

Teresa Vazquez has Bachelor degrees in English and Psychology, as well as a Master of Arts in Higher Education Administration, concentrating in Diversity and Social Justice. Her approach to education stems from strength-based theory and appreciative form of advising. Before coming to Saint Xavier University, she worked on racial justice, disability inclusion and religious pluralism through program development and management. She also has experience in academic advising, career advising, financial advising and study abroad.

In her free time, Vazquez enjoys reading all kinds of literature, watching sci-fi TV and movies, discovering new music, trying new recipes and writing about it all.

Suyapa Velásquez, M.A.
Academic Support Coach

Suyapa Velásquez holds a Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies with a minor in TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language) and a Master in Educational Leadership with a concentration in Higher Education Administration, both from Northeastern Illinois University. In addition to over 5 years of experience working in the higher education world at Northeastern Illinois University, her professional background also includes working with high school students as a Special Education and English Language Learners Paraprofessional at ASPIRA Business and Finance high school. She has provided academic support to high school students and guided those who are transitioning to their post-secondary education.

Velásquez is very energetic, passionate and committed to helping students of various cultural backgrounds navigate the higher education world, as she has a clear understanding of the many difficulties they may encounter when navigating post-secondary education. She considers communication and collaboration two important components in building institutional support for transitioning students.

Velásquez loves spending time with her family. In her spare time, she enjoys physical fitness, listening to varieties of music and watching personal growth videos. She also loves learning about people's cultures.

Mary Lu Wasniewski, LPC
Academic and Career Resource Advisor

Mary Lu Wasniewski holds a master's degree in counseling from Saint Xavier University and is a licensed professional counselor. Her professional background includes 30 years of experience in career services offices here and at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Her primary focus is working with undecided students on major and career choice, as well as working with students and alumni pursuing part time, internship and full-time positions, as well as developing resources and programs on career exploration topics.

Wasniewski enjoys travel, gardening, cooking and trying to get 10,000 steps each day.
