Summer camps are back at Saint Xavier University (SXU), and participating students can immerse themselves in week-long, high-quality educational experiences. The Student Media Summer Camp and the SXU Southside Summer Jazz Camp run from June 23-27.

The SXU-Southside Summer Jazz Camp offers students an opportunity to enhance their musical skills, cultivate a passion for jazz, and make new friends. Students of all levels of experience are encouraged to attend. Regardless of whether they are new to jazz or looking to expand their horizons, there is something for everyone.

Camp is open to students in sixth through 12th grade and includes daily rehearsals on jazz repertoire, instrumental sectionals, improvisation masterclasses, jam sessions, guest concerts, and music theory workshops. Students will showcase their talents at the final concert on June 27.

In the Jazz Camp's 10th year of operation, director of jazz and commercial music, Shawn Salmon, D.A., has witnessed many young students from the camp go on to graduate from SXU with music degrees.

"The camp allows young students to play music during the summer but also helps inspire them to possibly join us when they begin looking at colleges and even beyond. The SXU-Southside Summer Jazz Camp features some of the finest educators, all of whom are either SXU alums or current students, who lead ensemble rehearsals and run sectionals. This camp is a showcase of SXU's highest-quality students, past, present, and future. One of my favorite moments in camp is seeing all the campers [from 20 schools ranging from sixth through 12th grade] on break playing soccer, laughing together, and forming friendships," Salmon said.

The Student Media Camp offers a session on podcasting. Camp is open to all incoming high school freshmen through graduating seniors. Students will learn the fundamentals of starting a podcast and, throughout camp, will be equipped with the tools to help them develop podcast topics, properly record audio, and edit, promote, and distribute the podcast. Students will leave camp with the skills and confidence to start and continue their podcasts.

"Students will brainstorm topics, produce, record, edit, and submit their podcast via an RSS feed, allowing their audience to listen. Students will also learn how to research and communicate with one another, find common interests, and improve their interpersonal skills. The camp gives students the opportunity to find their voices. They can learn how to tell stories and communicate effectively with one another. It gives them confidence that they can do things they didn't think they could," Peter Kreten, director of student media, said.
