The Saint Xavier University Music Department is pleased to announce that its Sixth Annual SXU-Southside Summer Jazz Camp will run this summer from July 12-16, 2021 from 3 to 7 p.m.

As of now, we are planning to hold the 2021 SXU-Southside Summer Jazz Camp as an in-person camp. The health and safety of all will continue to be a priority of the camp, and we will be working to establish rehearsal conditions that fully comply with local and state health guidelines as well as the CDC and NASM health standards for rehearsals. One change from previous years is that the camp will meet from 3 to 7 p.m. to try and maximize daylight and the option for possible outdoor rehearsals and performances. We know that conditions can change very quickly, but we are hopeful that this summer we will all be in a place that making music together will be safe and possible.

The camp is open to students in sixth grade through 12th grade. The SXU-Southside Summer Jazz Camp provides students with the opportunity to learn from and work with an outstanding group of jazz educators who are dedicated to helping students gain their confidence and improve on their musical abilities as section players, improvisers and sight-readers. Students of all levels of experience are invited to attend, regardless of whether they are new to jazz or looking to experience something new by expanding their horizons.

The camp includes daily rehearsals on jazz repertoire, instrumental sectionals, improvisation master-classes, jam sessions, guest concerts and music theory workshops. Students will showcase their talents at the final concert on July 16, 2021.

Thank you, and we look forward to making music together at the SXU-Southside Summer Jazz Camp!

The SXU-Southside Summer Jazz Camp welcomes students of all instruments, including trumpet, trombone, saxophone, piano, string bass, guitar, vibraphone and drums. The cost of attending is $100 per student. For more information about the camp or if you have questions or concerns, please contact Dr. Shawn Salmon, director of Jazz Studies, at or 773-298-3420.
