Renaissance Academy
Attention: There are no spring 2022 term classes on campus. To reach the Renaissance Academy during this time, and to inquire about any virtual spring 2022 course offerings it is recommended to email renaissancechgo@gmail.com. For information about SXU's status, please visit the Coronavirus web page.
The Renaissance Academy is a collegial association of retired and semi-retired men and women who share learning experiences and intellectual growth in a friendly, relaxed, academic setting, regardless of educational background. Enrollment is open to all who believe in the importance of pursuing the Academy's life-long learning opportunities. Classes are peer-facilitated and include topics like philosophy, history, literature, current events, poetry and computer technology.
University Affiliation
Classrooms and some resources on campus are made available to Renaissance members as part of the Saint Xavier University community outreach initiative.
Membership Benefits
- Participation in one to three Academy classes each term
- Use of University library, lounges and café
- Use of the Shannon Center track during class days
- Special events and Speakers' Forum
- Invitations to selected University events
- Audit privileges for one University class with restrictions and approval
Curriculum
Individual Renaissance Academy members serve as class facilitators. They develop their
own programs and choose program materials. Members are encouraged to volunteer their
time so that the Academy may offer a broad selection of courses.
No testing or grading is included in the program; however, class participation provides
the energy that makes the Academy a viable entity.
Class Schedules
The class schedule is broken down into three terms; eight-week Fall Term, six-week Winter Term and eight-week Spring Term. Classes meet Tuesday and Thursday afternoons.
Registration
Membership registration is only in the fall, beginning the last week in August to the middle of September. For exact dates call the Renaissance Office after August 15, and leave a message; someone will call you back with the information. You may also email renaissancechgo@gmail.com. Class registration is only open to members.
Early enrollment is encouraged because of limited class sizes. The Renaissance Academy is limited to 300 members and registration of the previous year's membership is given priority.
Fees
The individual member fee is $175 per year.
Fees are for the whole year. Fees do not cover individual class fees, such as the cost for required texts or fees to cover outside speakers or field trips.
