Scholarship Details

The Daniel B. Fleming '93 Memorial Award is a scholarship for English students who are pursuing teaching careers. Since student teaching is a full-time, semester-long commitment that prevents many from maintaining outside employment, teacher candidates may experience financial constraints during their experience. This award has been created to ease those constraints. The award's eponym, Daniel B. Fleming, taught junior high language arts and high school English, and was a Saint Xavier University alumnus. The donor believes that Dan, who knew first-hand how difficult it was to student teach and work, would have been pleased to be able to help students in this manner.

Eligibility

English/Secondary Education majors who possess a minimum 3.0 GPA and who are planning to student teach in fall or spring of the 2024-2025 academic year are eligible to apply for this award. If you are interested, you may apply by submitting a 500-word essay that addresses how the Fleming Award will help you have a successful student teaching experience. The essay should address the following:

  • the applicant's need for the award
  • the academic merit of the applicant's record
  • the applicant's goals as a student teacher
  • the applicant's view of how the Fleming Award will assist him/her in developing as an excellent beginning teacher.

*Students applying for financial aid are automatically considered for these funds. Selection is based on a student’s match with a donor’s criteria. There is no separate application process.
