The SXU Health Center (SXUHC) is a multifunctional clinic committed to meeting the health care needs of our business community by providing high-quality and cost-efficient programs to employers. With a strong foundation in prevention, health and safety for employees, the SXUHC has partnered with schools, business and industry for years in order to provide comprehensive and customized services to meet their needs.
The SXUHC remains sensitive to the needs of the employer by offering our services at our campus location or as an on-site closed-company service.
We provide advice and treatment for a variety of minor illnesses and injuries. This includes, but is not limited to:
- Upper respiratory infections
- Common cold and influenza
- Urinary tract infections in women
- Conjunctivitis (eye infection)
- Minor cuts, abrasions, bruises and burns
- Sinusitis, tonsillitis, middle and outer ear Infections
- Ear wax removal
- Simple gastroenteritis
- Skin conditions and rashes
Health care workers face unique risks and possible exposures to infectious material through their contact with patients. Health care workers are also generally in a physically demanding environment. Many health care workers (including physicians, nurses, dental professionals, medical and nursing students, laboratory technicians, administrative staff, etc.) are at risk for exposure to and possible transmission of vaccine-preventable diseases, as well as work site injury.
We offer the following pre-employment screenings:
- Titers (blood draw to check for immunity to certain illnesses)
- TB Testing
- Drug Screens (DOT and non-DOT)
Asthma, diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol and heart disease are just some examples of common chronic illnesses. Having access to a SXU Nurse Practitioner assists your employees in their management of chronic illness. Our clinical professionals act as partners or coaches to share and build knowledge which is integral to the concept of disease management. It is a health strategy as well as an approach to personal health. It may reduce health care costs and/or improve quality of life and productivity for your staff. Our programs:
- Emphasize the patient's central role in managing their health
- Use effective self-management support strategies that include assessment, goal-setting, action planning, problem-solving and follow-up
- Organize internal and community resources to provide ongoing self-management support to patients
Effective self-management support means more than telling patients what to do. It means acknowledging the patients' central role in their care, one that fosters a sense of responsibility for their own health. It includes the use of proven programs that provide basic information, emotional support and strategies for living with chronic illness. SXUHC can use the latest technology for remote monitoring of a variety of chronic conditions. Using a collaborative approach, providers and patients work together to define problems, set priorities, establish goals, create treatment plans and solve problems along the way. This helps you keep your employees healthier and more productive.
- Federal law requires that drivers of commercial motor vehicles (CMVs) receive a physical examination by a licensed DOT medical examiner. The driver must be issued a valid Medical Examiner's Certificate in order to be able to legally drive with a DOT license.
- A DOT physical exam is valid for up to 24 months, although the medical examiner may certify a driver for less than 2 years based on the driver's medical history and exam.
- The purpose of the exam is to detect the presence of physical, mental or emotional conditions that would affect a driver's ability to operate a commercial vehicle safely. The SXUHC medical examiners are responsible for identifying those individuals who both meet and do NOT meet the criteria.
- The SXUHC staff will register the exam in the National Registry and issue a laminated card to the driver at the successful completion of the exam. Additionally, the results can be sent directly to the employer the same day as the exam.
- State law requires that School Bus drivers receive a physical examination and drug test by a licensed medical provider.
- Driver's certification is valid for up to 12 months based on the driver's medical history and exam.
- New drivers are also required to have Tuberculosis testing upon hire and repeated periodically.
- Drug screening for your employees is a key component of your company's risk control plan. SXUHC makes the process efficient, convenient and reliable, and offers several options to meet your specific needs. Employees can take the test at our campus or we can offer on-site testing. Employers receive the test results quickly, usually within 48 hours, and organizations can have the results sent to one centralized location or to various locations.
- We offer urine drug screens that follow the regulations of the Department of Transportation with results reviewed per protocol by a Medical Review Officer. We perform these tests as part of pre-employment, post-accident, random or for reasonable suspicion incidents.
- We also offer pre-employment and random non-DOT urine drug screens for health care workers and other industries that require urine drug screens for their employees. Our non-DOT urine drug screen is a 10-panel drug screen.

- It is much less expensive to prevent a disease than to treat it. Immunizations protect not only the employee receiving the vaccine, but all those around that employee. Proper immunization of your employees is vital to the health of your business.
- We keep most standard immunizations recommended by the CDC in-stock at the SXUHC. Please see our full list immunizations offered.
- A titer is a blood draw that checks the employee's immunity to certain diseases.
- Commonly health care providers have titers drawn to check immunity to measles, mumps, rubella, varicella and hepatitis B.
- We provide titer testing for those employees who do not have documentation of their immunizations or need to be sure they have immunity after vaccination.

Tetanus (lockjaw) is a serious disease that causes painful tightening of the muscles, usually all over the body. The bacterium that causes tetanus is found in soil; it is contracted through a puncture of the skin, after a burn or through an animal bite. Tetanus leads to death in about 1 in 10 cases. The CDC recommends that all adults receive a tetanus shot every 10 years. Protect yourself and your staff from this dangerous and potentially fatal illness.
Tuberculosis (TB) is a disease that is spread through the air from one person to another. Many schools, health care organizations, correctional facilities and shelters require TB screening as a condition of employment. We are able to offer pre-employment and ongoing support for individual and group screenings for your employees. There are two types of TB testing that can be completed for your organization:
- PPD Placement: A small amount of purified protein is injected under the skin and then the test is read by a SXUHC clinical provider 48-72 hours later. If the test is positive, this means that the employee has latent tuberculosis and needs further testing (generally a chest x-ray). The testing includes both the administration of the test and the visit 48 to 72 hours after the test for reading the results.
- QuantiFERON Gold: The blood is drawn and sent to a laboratory who interprets the results. This test is generally recommended for employees who have had indeterminant PPD results or who had a BCG vaccination as a child.

Our outpatient laboratory presents a comfortable, convenient setting for your staff to receive the tests they need. To help put them at ease, individual rooms provide the comfort of complete privacy during the procedure.
On a daily basis we draw blood for testing with ability, experience and sensitivity. Our highly skilled medical assistant and nurse practitioners obtain needed samples with minimal stress. Once the samples are obtained, they are sent to Quest Laboratory for testing, and timely and accurate results are given directly to the referring physicians and/or employers.
The SXUHC offers many programs to your organization for CPR and First Aid instruction. Programs can be customized to meet your needs.
- Basic Life Support (BLS): The class is generally completed by health care providers who must have a credentialed card documenting successful completion of a CPR course. Participants will be trained to save lives of victims in cardiac arrest through high-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). The course will prepare health care professionals to know how to perform CPR in both in and out of hospital settings. You will be trained to promptly recognize cardiac arrest, give high-quality chest compressions, deliver appropriate ventilations, clear airway obstructions and provide early use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) as part of a team and individually. The course also covers rescue techniques for adult, child and infants. Each participant will receive a certification eCard valid for 2 years in accordance with the American Heart Association's guidelines. Length: 4 hours
- Heartsaver® CPR/AED: This class is generally completed by non-health care providers. There is an option to obtain a certification eCard at the end of the course if needed. Participants will learn to save the lives of victims in cardiac arrest through cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) and relief of choking. The course also covers rescue techniques for adult, child and infants. Length: 3 hours
- Heartsaver® First Aid: This American Heart Association approved course covers the identification and basic treatment of medical and injury emergencies so that participants would know what to do in the event of an emergency until professional help arrives. Each participant will receive a certification card valid for 2 years in accordance with the American Heart Association's guidelines. Length: 3 hours
- Heartsaver® CPR/AED/First Aid: This combined class covers both the Heart Saver CPR/AED and First Aid topics. Each participant will receive a certification card valid for 2 years in accordance with the American Heart Association's guidelines. Length: 6 hours

A biometric screening is a short health examination that tracks a small number of significant indicators of a person's overall health. Measurements are relatively easy to attain and results provide a simple scorecard of leading indicators that give a baseline of health. Subsequent screenings continue to track the risk level of a person for certain diseases and medical conditions. Many employers encourage their employees to complete this type of health screening so they can start thinking about their health and pursue treatment if needed before any issues become detrimental. Testing can take place at the Health Center or a work site.
The major health benefit to businesses is the reduction of a company's overall health-coverage costs. The major health benefit to employees is that they are usually provided at no cost. Some employees fail to get routine health screenings by their health care providers, so a biometric health screening may be the first warning they get that they are in the early stages of a potential health problem.
In general, the screening typically takes just a few minutes and includes height, weight and waist measurements and with a regular blood draw or a finger-stick blood test to measure cholesterol, triglycerides and glucose levels.
