Cougars on Parade

4-7 p.m., Reception at Gilhooley's

Mirroring Chicago's famous "Cows on Parade," departments and organizations throughout the University have "adopted" and decorated cougar statues for SXU's very own "Cougars on Parade." The decorated statues will be displayed around the Chicago campus beginning at noon. Walk around campus to preview the finished works of art then join us at Gilhooley's Grande Saloon to kick off Homecoming 2012! Free appetizers. Cash bar. RSVP to alumni@sxu.edu.

Spirit of Mercy Liturgy

Noon, McDonough Chapel

This liturgical celebration combines two longstanding traditions: a Mass of the Holy Spirit at the start of the academic year at Catholic universities and the commemoration of Mercy Day at institutions sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy. All are welcome!

Leadership Commissioning

3:30 p.m., Academy Bell

Representatives from all areas of University life will be commissioned -- sponsors, Trustees, administrators, faculty, staff, alumni and students. The commissioning will be followed by an opportunity to "Meet the Mercys."

Service Through Action Team (S.T.A.T.) Brown Bag Project

6 p.m., Atrium, Warde Academic Center

In the spirit of our Mercy heritage, alumni, students, staff and faculty are invited to help us prepare lunches for local shelters and organizations serving our neighbors in need. Donations of peanut butter, jelly, snacks and juice pouches are always appreciated. If you would like to volunteer and/or donate a product or money, please contact the Office of Alumni and Parent Relations at alumni@sxu.edu or 773-298-3316.

This family-friendly event is sure to please everyone. Traditional golfers can have some fun with a nine-hole golf scramble. Nontraditional golfers and families can enjoy a round of miniature golf, bean bags and/or bocce ball. Participants are invited to wrap up the evening at a reception on the outdoor patio.

  • Traditional golfers – $45 (includes golf with cart, dinner and soft drinks – cash bar)
  • Miniature golfers – Adults $15; children (12 & under) $10 (includes miniature golf, dinner and soft drinks)

Homecoming12th Annual Cougar 5K Run/Walk

9 a.m., Shannon Center

Join alumni, students, parents and friends of SXU in the 12th Annual Cougar 5K Run/Walk. All participants receive a long sleeve T-shirt, refreshments and a ticket to the football game upon request. The course starts and finishes on the campus and runs through Evergreen Park. Register online at the Cougar 5K web page.

In addition to a pre-game reunion celebration for the classes of '07, '02, '92, '87 and '82, the Office of Alumni and Parent Relations welcomes all the reunion groups from the SOE, SON, GSM, CAS and SCPS.

  • $25 per person (21 and over) includes food and beverages.
  • A portion of the proceeds will support the Student Scholarship Fund or the Cougar Club.
  • Parents are welcome!

Homecoming Liturgy

Homecoming 2012 will culminate with an outdoor celebration of the Liturgy of the Word and will include a blessing for the recipients of the Spirit of Saint Xavier Awards - alumni who, in word and deed, exemplify Saint Xavier University's core values of respect, excellence, compassion, service, hospitality, integrity, diversity and learning for life.

The recipients of the 2012 Spirit of Saint Xavier Awards:

  • Kevin Clark '78
    Sister Dorothy Marie Peschon '19 Award
    This award is named in honor of one of the first graduates of Saint Xavier College for Women, and recipients embody the values of the Sisters of Mercy in the pursuit of opening new doors to Saint Xavier students. He or she also serves as an exemplary volunteer and supporter of the University's endeavors.
  • Bernada Baker '04
    Rita A. Ford '98, Faith in the Future Award
    This award is presented to a promising alumnus/a who graduated in the past 10 years and has achieved personal, professional and social accomplishments that reflect the ideals of Saint Xavier University.
  • Patrick "Andy" Devine '75
    Spirit of Saint Xavier Award
    This award honors the alumna/us who through personal and professional achievement reflects the ideals of Saint Xavier University in the Mercy tradition of respect, excellence, compassion, service, hospitality, integrity, diversity and learning for life. He or she also understands the importance of giving back to support the next generation of Saint Xavier students.

A reception honoring these exceptional alumni will be held on the patio of the Smith-Morris Quad immediately following the liturgy. All are welcome.
