General Resources

You will find a number of general resources to help you prepare for career and educational opportunities as a student with a disability. In addition, you will find advocacy resources highlighting information on anti-discrimination laws, equal opportunity, and employment accommodations.

Titles I and V of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 outline employment discrimination laws with regard to people with disabilities.

ABILITY Magazine strives to change public perception of what it means to have a disability and focuses on ability while shattering myths and stereotypes that surround disabilities.

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission is responsible for enforcing federal laws that make it illegal to discriminate against a job applicant or an employee because of the person's race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy, gender identity and sexual orientation), national origin, age (40 or older), disability or genetic information.

The Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services understands the many challenges still facing individuals with disabilities and their families. Therefore, the office is committed to improving results and outcomes for people with disabilities of all ages.

The Office of Disability Employment Policy is the only non-regulatory federal agency that promotes policies and coordinates with employers and all levels of government to increase workplace success for people with disabilities.

The United States Department of Labor has several agencies that can help people with disabilities find meaningful work and launch successful careers, help employers hire people with disabilities, and help federal contractors stay within the law when hiring.

The Disabilities, Opportunities, Internetworking and Technology Center is dedicated to empowering people with disabilities through technology and education. It promotes awareness and accessibility -- in both the classroom and the workplace.

This directory lists the Selective Placement Program Coordinators in federal agencies who can provide information for local installations.
