Latino/Latin American Studies Minor

Latino studies examines the experiences of Latin American and Caribbean peoples living in the United States. This area of study focuses on issues such as the historical contributions of Latinos in the U.S., migration, culture, identity and community. Latin American studies specifically examines the region of the globe called Latin America and the Spanish-speaking Caribbean, with an emphasis on that area's economy, politics, history and culture. The Latino/Latin American studies program at Saint Xavier University combines these disciplines to provide a well-rounded, global perspective on the Latino experience.

Latino/Latin American studies courses are a source of professional development that complement areas of study related to the Latino population such as education, nursing, communications, business and any of the social sciences. The minor can be especially helpful for those entering graduate and professional schools, where the material will have equipped students with a valuable and necessary perspective on Latino issues. For the student population in particular, and others interested in Latino culture, the program acknowledges the presence of Latino/Latin American students, staff and faculty on campus.

Minor Requirements

The program emphasizes learning through curriculum, research and community service. Students will have the opportunity to take courses appropriate to Latino/Latin American studies scholarship by faculty members from a wide range of departments on campus.
