Middle Eastern Studies Minor

The Middle Eastern Studies minor contributes to the mission of the University and its core values of respect, service, hospitality, diversity and learning for life by providing course work, study abroad, and community partnerships and events that promote learning about and understanding of the Middle East, its various peoples, geographies, religions, languages and cultures.

Students from a variety of disciplines will find the minor of interest, including those in business, nursing and education, whose future clients, patients and students may be of Middle Eastern descent.

Moreover, Middle Eastern American students may find this coursework beneficial in learning more about their cultural heritage and immigrant experience.

Area residents with Middle Eastern backgrounds, especially those in southwest Chicago, or those with an interest in the Middle Eastern history, culture, religions or contemporary events will also find the minor helpful in promoting life-long learning and mutual understanding.

“The Sociology, Anthropology and CJ department and the Middle Eastern Studies Program helped prepare and nurture me for all the work I’m doing now, whether it’s research at other universities or my work with refugees. Partaking in the PAS Study aboard program at Birzeit University - Palestine changed my life. It was an honor studying at one of the greatest academic institutions in the world. It’s a program SXU should add on their study abroad options, because it helps shed light on Palestinian culture and grassroots movements.”
