The Physical Education major at Saint Xavier University is designed for students who are passionate about teaching, movement, and promoting lifelong health and wellness in youth. Earning a Physical Education degree equips students withe the professional credentials, pedagogical expertise, and practical experience required to teach in Illinois schools and positively impact youth health and wellness. Without this degree, graduates cannot obtain ISBE licensure or access long-term career pathways in K-12 education. Through SXU's PE program, students gain evidence-based teaching strategies, classroom and behavior management skills, and the ability to design inclusive, standards-aligned curricula that promotes physical literacy, fitness, and lifelong activity. The degree also opens doors to leadership roles in schools, coaching opportunities, graduate study, and related careers in youth development, health promotion, and sports education providing both immediate employability and long-term professional growth.

About the Program
Students in the Physical Education major at SXU develop the knowledge, skills, and professional competencies needed to become effective, licensed K-12 physical educators. The curriculum blends foundational coursework in kinesiology, motor learning, exercise science, adapted physical education, and pedagogy with progressive field based experiences in real school settings. Courses emphasize evidence-based teaching strategies, inclusive and culturally responsive instruction, classroom and behavior management, assessment of student learning, and curriculum design aligned with Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) standards and national SHAPE America guidelines. Students are taught by experienced faculty who bring real-world expertise as former K–12 educators, coaches, athletic trainers, and exercise science professionals, ensuring instruction is both academically rigorous and practically grounded. The program adheres to ISBE licensure requirements and prepares students for state certification as licensed physical education teachers. Through supervised clinical experiences, student teaching, and ongoing mentorship, graduates leave SXU classroom-ready, professionally credentialed, and prepared to promote lifelong physical activity, health, and wellness among diverse student populations.
- Internships within the program allow for hands-on experience within the field.
- Student teaching ensures compliance with the ISBE standards and also gives hands-on experience in teaching.
- Technology within the courses at SXU further students' knowledge and experience with tools they will use in their careers.
PLO 2- Health-Enhancing Fitness and Self-Assessment: Students will design, implement, monitor, and adjust a personal health-related fitness plan, demonstrating knowledge of self-assessment strategies and achieving/maintaining a health-enhancing level of physical fitness. Corresponds to State Goal 20: "Achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of physical fitness based upon continual self assessment."
PLO 3-Teamwork and Social Participation in Physical Activity: Students will demonstrate effective collaboration, leadership, communication, and ethical behavior when participating in team, dual, and individual physical activity contexts. Corresponds to State Goal 21: "Develop skills necessary to become a successful member of a team by working with others during physical activity."
PLO 4- Health Promotion, Prevention and Lifelong Activity: Students will apply principles of health promotion and injury/illness prevention and treatment and will design physical activity programs that support a lifelong active lifestyle. Corresponds to State Goal 22: "Understand principles of health promotion and the prevention and treatment of illness and injury."
PLO 5- Human Body Systems and Growth/Development: Students will demonstrate knowledge of human body systems, the factors that influence growth and development, and how physical activity interacts with these systems over the lifespan. Corresponds to State Goal 23: "Understand human body systems and factors that influence growth and development."
PLO 6- Communication, Decision-Making and Well-Being in Physical Activity: Students will use effective decision-making, self-management, and communication skills to promote and enhance personal health and well being through physical activity. Corresponds to State Goal 24: "Promote and enhance health and well-being through the use of effective communication and decision-making skills."
