Scarlet and Gray Awards Ceremony
Each spring, students, faculty and staff gather to celebrate and formally recognize student achievements in leadership, service, and extracurricular involvement at Saint Xavier University during the Scarlet and Gray Awards Ceremony.
Departments such as Admission, Campus Ministry, Campus Life, Center for SUCCESS, Learning Center, Residence Life, Student Employment, Student Success Program, and Student Media give out awards to high-achieving students.
In addition to departmental awards, students who successfully complete the Cougars LEAD Leadership Certificate are awarded their certificate of completion and medallion to wear at graduation.
Finally, the highest honors of the evening are awarded by the Dean of Students and President of Saint Xavier University:
- Dean of Students' Award for Student Leadership: This award is presented by the dean of students, Katy Thompson, to an upper-class student who has modeled leadership in their time on campus, fostered younger members' involvement in student organizations, served in some significant capacity as a student leader and mentor, and who has exemplified the best characteristics -- academic, social and co-curricular -- of an SXU student.
- President's Award for Service Leadership: "Ours is not to do the extraordinary, but to do the ordinary extraordinarily well." Catherine McAuley, founder of the Sisters of Mercy, used this phrase to inspire her sisters to service. In that spirit, this award is presented by Saint Xavier University President Laurie Joyner, Ph.D., to one student each year who has contributed most greatly to the University's mission by serving the students of Saint Xavier while embodying the core values of hospitality, integrity, and compassion. This student has, in a spirit of humility, contributed to the life of the campus by putting the needs of others first and demonstrating dedication to the services and programs of the University.
