Support for Every Stage

Speech Sounds

When a child is difficult to understand or has trouble producing certain sounds, therapy can help build clearer, more effective speech.

We support children with articulation and phonological disorders, childhood apraxia of speech, and other speech sound needs.

Language and Early Communication

Some children need additional support learning to understand or use language.

Services may focus on first words, vocabulary, combining words, following directions, grammar, storytelling, conversation, and other skills needed to communicate, learn, and connect with others.

Augmentative and Alternative Communication

There are many ways to communicate.

AAC may include gestures, pictures, communication boards, tablets, or speech-generating devices. We help children and families develop communication systems that support greater participation and independence.

Finding the right communication system -- and helping families access it.

Our specialized AAC Diagnostic Clinic provides comprehensive evaluations for individuals who may benefit from a speech-generating device.

Our team supports clients and families throughout the process, including AAC evaluation, device selection and fitting, trials, and assistance navigating insurance and device funding.

Because obtaining a personal device can take time, the Ludden Clinic can also provide a loaner communication device during the waiting period, helping individuals begin communicating with their recommended system sooner.

Social Communication

Therapy may address conversation, social interaction, perspective-taking, self-advocacy, problem-solving, emotional understanding, and navigating communication across home, school, and community settings.

Fluency

For children who stutter or experience other differences in the flow of speech, therapy focuses on effective communication, confidence, self-advocacy, and reducing communication-related struggle.

Voice and Resonance

Children may experience hoarseness, vocal fatigue, differences in pitch or loudness, or changes in resonance.

Therapy supports healthy, functional voice use in collaboration with the child's healthcare team when appropriate.

Feeding and Swallowing

Feeding and swallowing skills affect nutrition, development, family routines, and participation.

Services may support children experiencing difficulty with chewing, swallowing, drinking, or other feeding-related skills, with goals individualized to the child's needs.

Hearing and Listening

Hearing and auditory skills play an important role in speech and language development.

Services may address listening, communication strategies, auditory skills, and communication needs related to hearing differences in collaboration with audiologists and other professionals.

Cognitive-Communication

Injury, illness, developmental differences, and other conditions can affect attention, memory, organization, problem-solving, and communication.

Therapy helps children and adolescents develop strategies that support communication, learning, and everyday participation.

More Than Individual Therapy

Diagnostic Clinic clinicians working with client

Children learn through interaction, play, practice, and connection.

In addition to individual therapy, the Ludden Clinic offers group and specialized programming designed to help children practice communication in meaningful, real-world contexts.

Services may be provided in person, through telehealth, or in a hybrid format when appropriate.

Families are Part of the Team

Communication doesn't stop when a therapy session ends.

We partner with parents and caregivers to identify meaningful goals and provide strategies that can support communication during everyday routines -- at home, at school, and in the community.

More Ways to Learn, Grow and Connect

For SXU Students

Learn here.
Make an impact here.

Where coursework becomes clinical practice.

SXU graduate students complete approximately 200 of the 400 clinical hours required for graduation at the Ludden Clinic, gaining hands-on experience in assessment and therapy  across the lifespan and scope of SLP practice.

Students may evaluate a toddler with delayed language, provide speech therapy to a school-age child, support an AAC user, facilitate a social communication group, or coach families in strategies they can use at home.

And the experience starts early: Undergraduate students also have opportunities to engage at the Ludden Clinic and gain exposure to clinical practice.
